I have a 6ft 125 gal tank that has been up approx 4 years. During this time I have been running jebao powerheads and seem to get approx 18 mths or so out of a power head before failure. I hate having to unhook the wires to clean them so admittedly they dont get cleaned as often as I like. Currently I have the pp-8s and I dont think I have enough flow that and bad house keeping has led to an algae problem. I will not go up in size in power head due to the space it takes up in the tank.

I guess my question is I was looking at the vortex mp40s and they seem to fit what I want....easy to clean and reliable. So now for the question. Could I expect to get 5 years out of an MP40. If so I can justify the price. I know there is no hardest time but looking for general advice.

Welcome to R2R. Like all brands sometimes you get a good one and sometimes you get one that isn't. No amount of quality control will find all the bad ones. So to answer your question some will make it 5+ years and some won't. I have heard good and bad about Ecotech customer service. I bought 3 on Black friday sales and they have run flawlessly for a little over the month they have been in the tank. Will they work in 5 years i'm not sure, but the ease of swapping and cleaning has made it worth it to me.

The answer is ..... it depends. If you install them properly and clean the wet side a couple of times a year, then no reason to not get 5 years out of one. Indeed, the dry side and controller should last much longer than that but the wet side probably will need replacing. I’ve had some wetsides go longer than 5 years; others go less. All of the ones I have currently have 2013 or 2014 manufacture dates on them and they’re all running on the original wetsides.

The Jebao pumps are disposable and generally of poor quality. Vortech is a sizable step up in quality and performance, but of course price as well. Probably a better long term value.

My oldest mp40 has a 2011 build date. I only had to replace the wetside because they stopped making spare parts for the old style wetsides. If not for that I would still have only my original investment in it.

I bought a MP40 and it lasted 2 months before the dryside failed. Unfortunatly, I didn't get my tank going until about a year after I bought it....past the 1 year warranty.
