More newbie problems . I have two aqueon 950gph circulation pumps in my 40 breeder. I have positioned them a hundred times since setting up but just cannot get my sand to stay put. It is all being pushed to the center of my tank with the edges being bare bottom. I've tried angling them to the surface, at the glass, at the rock, etc. Is it just too much flow? :noidea:

That is a bunch of flow for a 40 being over 46 times per hour, but its not impossible. Rock placement and placement of the powerheads will effect it. Try moving them down in the tank and pointing them up.

Also if you used sugar sized oolite sand it will blast it everywhere. You can always throw some heavier sand in that will settle on the top.
Good luck!

All depends on the sand size, if its the sugar size like Pete suggests, then yea, its gonna be hard to hold it down.
When you positioned the powerheads, did you put them like half way down the glass, pointing up? On either side of the tank?

IMO they're a bit more positioned to the top than half way down on my tank, one on each side across from eachother. I have them both pointing up, one at back glass and one at front glass atm. The sand I use is the stuff from reefrocks.net

This is when I was using 2 seio superflow 620 in my 29. I had the flow directed up and at the back of the tank.

That was long ago for the 29, well over a year. I now have much more flow because I replaced one with a wp25

Oh alright. So it wouldn't be a bad thing to have them both pointed in the same direction? I've been trying to keep them opposite but maybe thats part of the problem. Thanks for the picture.

Counter flow is a good thing, and can actually create alternating currents. Without them pointed at eachother I would have had a sandnado for sure.
