Hey Randy, just wondering what your thoughts are on fluorine in the reef tank?
Any way to test for it? (don't think I saw that on triton, I'll have to double check)

Thank you sir!

Craig Bingman discussed fluoride in this now quite old article:

http://web.archive.org/web/20030626...twork.com/fish2/aqfm/1997/nov/bio/default.asp

Since then, more organic biochemicals containing fluorine have been found, often apparently quite toxic and likely made to deter herbivores. Compounds such as fluoroacetate made by plants and microorganisms, for example, are very toxic.

This article reviews the natural biochemistry of fluorine and the other halogens:

For a while (maybe now), ESV sold a supplement containing bromide and fluoride. I don't recall any say they noticed any big effect from it one way or the other. I dosed my own fluoride for a while, but didn't notice any effects.

You can get fluoride in seawater tested in the Basic package by ENC labs:

Triton can probably do it for an extra fee, since they are using the same or similar method and mentioned earlier today that they can detect most things at the same time.

Triton was testing it with the HPLC test along with chloride and No3 but presently not offering it at this time as they are concentrating all of their efforts on ICP testing.

So it doesn't fit into this comment they just made? (not about fluorine but about other ions)

"Hey guys , we could do that with our ICP and we would not charge more, but you would need to contact me afterwards.
Our ICP scans and saves the whole spectrum of measurment for all Elements that can be detected, so if you want I can have a look on the things you want to find afterwards. It would be a qualitativ detection but still would help you I guess.

All the best Ehsan"

I can certainly ask Ehsan about it. I don't know why flourine was never tested with the ICP but rather the HPLC but I'm sure there's a reason. I know he has provided results for other ions in the past for people who specifically request it. Like lanthanum prior to it being included on the standard panel of things tested.
