Fluval 305 Canister filter use in reef tank

Guys i found my old Fluval 305 canister filter in my attic... I was debating using this to run

Carbon and phosban for my 120 gallon display.... SInce i won't have any sponges (Do i need them?) in there just the media
do i have to worry about a build up of nitrates and other bad stuff?

Also if i can run it, where should i draw the water? The first chamber? the refuge or the return chamber?

i ran a fluval canister for almost a year with no problems just keep it cleaned out

I also used a canister for years just have to clean it once a month

I had o e many years ago but found it to be too much maintenance and more trouble for me at least then what it was worth. Switched it out with a good sump and skimmer and never looked back. Good luck with whatever you decide. Keep us posted.

I ran an eheim cannister filter for a while with ceramic rings in it. Whenever I cleaned it out I could always filter out 100+ pods to add back to my tank. Tube worms and such even started growing in it. Never had problems (until it got a slow leak one day because of a cross-thread), but I was also running a sump with macro-algae and a skimmer that kept nitrates down near zero.
