Hi I have a fluval 405 canister filter. Do I need to replace the carbon or clean it up every so often?

You should clean out the canister weekly. Canister filters are not a great choice for saltwater tanks due to their natural ability to trap ditreus and turn it into Nitrates. In reality, you don't need a mechanical filter at all as long as you have enough rock and a skimmer and keep up with tank maintenance.
