So I have a 20g reef tank and I really want to rework the filtration would it be a viable option to use an aquaclear 70g with the refugium mod and an overflow box.
My tank is a 20g lps and low light sps tank. I also have a protein skimmer on the tank.
I have one powerhead for water movement and could upgrade to 2 if need be. I'm trying to avoid drilling and sumping this tank

I like the aquaclear. I never saw that box before, looks cool, not sure it is needed. What are u using it for now? Mechanical, biological or chemical?

You could totally make it work. You may lose the mechanical and chemical if you don’t have any other filters like a media reactor. As long as you have enough live rock and good flow the conversation should be good. Get a light and maybe some mud, rock or cheato for pods to grow.

Theres a cool mod for it where you can turn it to a refugium and still have room for light mechanical and chemical filtration. Is the box neccessary or do I even need to worry about surface skimming if I have high surface agitation

Also mechanical filtering from my understanding is pointless in a hob with a good enough skimmer because the hob would just throw out a ton of nitrates

FME surface skimming is always good especially since it improves surface turnover

What do you mean by "hob would just throw out a ton of nitrates" ?

Should have specified. Using filter floss and sponge in the hob becomes nitrate factory

sponge maybe, but replacing filter floss every three days will be exporting nutrients, just for thought, if there is no filter floss or sponge where does all that organic material go? (the same material that would be feeding the nitrate factory)

I used an aqua clear for a few days. Tried it on my rimless and a rimmed 20gallon. I couldn’t stand the waterfall splashing making a mess and getting salt everywhere. Just food for thought.
