Fluval cannister question

my question is whether a fluval 407 is overkill on a 40 gallon breeder. (Fish only, eventually reef)

I use a 207 on a 16 gallon nano. It's fine. You need the flow after all, as opposed to most freshwater setups.

For me i take out the sponges on the left and replace it with polyfil so the rest of my trays can be biohome biomedia
