Hey everyone!
Wondering what everybody is using as a battery backup for power outages. We seem to be having alot of lightning storms lately and I cannot sleep thinking I may Wake up to a disaster!
Also the brs videos make you wonder about the big power supplies as they ran out after only a few hours!!

For a tank that size you could go on Amazon or best buy and find a battery back up for electronics to run the heater and return. I have seen several doing small tanks with them.

General ups to run a pump for about 3-4 hours maybe? Idk I also need to find a better solution. If I am home I have a larger tank with an MP40 backup I can throw them in.

I found this on big Al's. It's ugly but says it will last a day or two. Anyone used one of these with success? Looking at the model that turns on when power cuts out.

I use the cyberpower USP 425v for my battery backup in my fluval Evo. I have both my sicce return and wavemaker on it to keep circulation moving when the power goes out. It kicked in a couple of times this past month due to rolling blackouts here in socal. Works great

have the biology of the tank ready, not just the hardware. any reef that lives in outage prone areas needs to be kept much cleaner than average. detritus loading is a very heavy oxygen tax during power outages, if I had to guess more than the collective fish loading.


a dirty sandbed is its own oxygen tax above your fish...wow (aerobes + unlimited food)

wastewater plants and catch runoff plants for meat processors measure and alter this factor in detailed ways every hour of the day for 30+ years in their labs to keep plants within compliance


biological and chemical oxygen demand of organic sludge and how that saps 02 is an industry-analyzed process

dont have a typical sandbed in these types of tanks. bare bottom is safest, and second safest is a cleaned sandbed that when you stick your hand in it and twist around, a death cloud doesnt well up. clean is your lowest BOD/COD mode and dirty is the most dangerous mode even if the sandbed looks all neat with worms and perfect balance. those are cloudy.

having your biology set amplifies what your battern backups can accomplish and it extends the lifespan of the tank specifically when under stress. dirty tanks have for sure survived power outages, but bare bottom tanks will go much longer in a stilled condition/worst case scenario

Interesting. I have an aragonite substrate and I vacuum it down to the bottom every weekend. I believe I have a cleanish substrate.
This is interesting although even with a clean or barebottom substrate I would like to have some sort of battery back-up!

I haven't (luckily) but there is an online calculator that estimates how long it'll power your devices based on the wattage
