Fluval Evo 13.5 Build Thread

So I think I made a terrible mistake and forgot to run carbon after pulling/fragging most of my Xenia. Needless to say, over the past few days every lps in my tank, all at once, began to close up and then melt.

It was definitely frightening, but yesterday I did a massive water change and then inserted carbon. Today, the results seem promising. My unidentified encrusting coral is growing back, along with most of my frogspawns.

Unfortunately I think that one of my two-headed frogspawns is a goner. Although it’s not as receded, it is dropping its tentacles one by one. As long as BJD doesn’t emerge, however, I’m willing to keep it in the tank and give it a chance.

Sorry, that really stinks.

Yeah, I was definitely upset and frustrated but I am glad that most of my corals are recovering now. I suppose everyone makes honest mistakes now and then…
That's how I felt after my phosphate test kit went bad and I started dosing to try to bring it up. Before I realized what the issue was, it made it up at about 0.40 and killed a lot of my best zoa colonies and bleached a bunch of mushrooms that still haven't recovered weeks later. Oh well.

So far all the corals seem to be recovering well. Melted flesh is already starting to be covered with new flesh, and polyps are extended. The only one experiencing problems is the frogspawn, who is starting to extend again, but keeps getting flipped by my pistol shrimp (I moved it onto the sandbed out of flow temporarily, which seems to be helping it recover).

Update! All corals seem to be quite recovered. The encrusting coral is completely covered by flesh once more (which, interestingly enough, grew back fluorescent green rather than red), and the frogspawn’s remaining flesh looks fantastic! I’m glad that this crisis was, for the most part, adverted, and I look forward to keeping you all up to date with future events!

Now that I have my 35g cycling I'm thinking of starting a lower maintenance tank like yours. The coral are beautiful

One thing I have to recommend is not to keep fast growing corals on the same island as the rest…half my problems stem from that.

The plan was to just throw green star polyp everywhere. Someone on here has a gsp mountain with a few sps and I want that. Only problem is my radion isn't doing the best right now so ill have to save for a new light system

Well, the upgrade bug finally bit me, and I decided to take advantage of Petco’s sale and buy a 40 gallon breeder. The upgrade process itself won’t be for another few weeks, but I’m happy to say that things are finally in the works. Don’t worry, I’ve still got some big plans down the line for the 13.5 gallon tank!! Coral QT? Clownfish prison? Mantis shrimp setup? Who knows?!!

The encrusting coral looks like a leptoseris, also that frogspawn looks beautiful - I have a huge hammer and would love a frogspawn to go with it. A shame you had to go through a spike due to pulsing xania.

Thanks! Yeah that spike was definitely hard to get under control, but I think I have a new theory as to what happened. Yesterday I did a water change and accidentally dropped a rock on some palys. They burst and let slime out. This morning I woke up to all my lps practically dead (looking very similar to before). I then did another water change and ran some carbon and they’re starting to look a little better. Something tells me that a similar thing happened a few weeks ago, and I accidentally harmed a paly.

I did not regret switching from evo to red sea but the evo still is in use. I'm in 4 weeks now so technically I'm still an Evo user
Nice! I’m also thinking about switching it to a freshwater tank down the line! For now, it will probably be a qt tank for the new 40B fish.

Do it! Do a high tech planted tank. It would be amazing looking!

For sure! Although plants can be surprisingly hard to keep. I’ve had bad luck with even Anubias lol
I'm getting back into it now. Before my anubias was flowering and I could grow baby tears. I think your tank would look amazing
