Fluval fx6 upgrade tips

Hi All,

I wanted to get some tips/suggestions on upgrades for my Fluval fx6. Upgrades probably isn’t the right word - more so need suggestions on in-line equipment I can use to with it.

looking to add an inline protein skimmer and UV sterilizer. I know Fluval sells an inline sterilizer, but I think that’s meant for their smaller canisters.

The tank it’s on is a 50g fish/invert only that I’d like to switch over to a reef down the road.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

The best upgrades are a HOB filter or external sump.

I’m not opposed to doing a regular hob protein skimmer, was just curious if any of the inline ones are better options.

I have a Aqueon 75 I could fashion into something, just don’t like how noisy it can be at times.

I actually initially had a sump for this tank, but at times I am away too long for work - I have someone come to feed the fish/check in things, but I found there were always problems when I’d come back so figured switching to a large canister would help. The fx6 is completely full of ceramic bio balls, not just the standard sponges and bags.
