Okay so do you guys recommend using a foam pad underneath your acrylic sump? If so, how thick and any recommendations on where to find a decent one?

My sump will be 44" x 18" and will be sitting on a solid finished flat wood bottom stand. I currently have a 60" glass sump that the builder shipped and recommended using the white foam you find in shipping.

Obviously I would like something black and a little nicer looking :)

Any downsides to using one?

If the builder recommended it you use what he sent you, then that's what I would use. He trusted it enough to ship with it.

I do like styrofoam. This is what I use.

I think a foam pad is always a good idea. Glass or acrylic tanks don't like to be twisted or bent.

I have essentially foam poster board under my tank and sump. You just want it to even out the surface. Doesn't need to be thick IME.

I use a product called sound board I found at Home Depot.
Doesn't seem to soak up water very well.
It's more for keeping pumps in the sump from rattling on the bottom.

Sorry I should have clarified.. the builder of the tank/stand used a different sump. I purchased another Acrylic sump to use and was told they didn't have any idea what I should use since they didn't know my stand. So I figured I would just ask here :)

Thanks for the responses everyone. I would like to keep it nice looking and preferably black... it's what I use under my tank on top of the stand.. but I'm not sure if that would work for acrylic and I don't know the name of it.. but it's basically black rolled up plastic foam.

I am waiting on a 7' tank and plan to use a yoga mat under it. Found on amazon for $20. I ask Reef Savvy and they said would be fine. Maybe you could go that route. They offer several colors but im with you I liked the black

99cent store sells these black foam padding that are in pieces and you can put out a few pieces together and cut them to your fitting. They are use for padding on the floor for like work station and such. I use it for my sump and tank...which are both acrylic.

I would prefer one piece black foam if that is safe to use, but I can't seem to find 18" or 24" widths in a roll. I guess the pieces would be okay. Thanks again :)
