food gets sucked into in filter

I noticed that when I feed my fish, the food a lot of the time will float around the tank, then get sucked right into the intanke for filtering. I have circulation pumps, but they are off during this time. Does anyone else have this issue, or have any ways to prevent food from getting sucked in during feeding?

Assuming you have a sump, try turning off you return pump but leave the powerheads running. What type of food are you feeding?

Are you referring to the pump? I've done it for over 10 years and never lost a pump. My DC pump was much easier as it had a feed mode. If your using pellets try something like TDO chromaboost medium, ocean nutrition pellets that are designed to sink instead of float. Depending on your tank inhabitants maybe look into foods like reef nutrition refrigerated foods or LRS reef frenzy as well.

You can also try feeding just a little bit at a time, sounds like you may be putting too much food in there

If you're using pellets I recommend letting them soak in a small cup of tank water and then pouring them in so they start sinking right off the bat. My clown will chase them around until he gets them. Same goes with any frozen foods. You will think they are making a mess of your tank but you'll find they disappear pretty quickly
