I was getting worried about using a brute garbage can for mixing water for changes. I picked up a couple 55 gallon food safe barrels that contained root beer emulsion. The ingredients are listed below. I don't think anything is harmful but I cannot get rid of the root beer smell. Even after rinsing and a vinegar soak. I get the feeling it is safe to use but wanted to be sure. Any advice would be appreciated.

water
gum aribic
citrid acid
sodium benzoate
natural and artificial flavors

I am not sure of the chemistry involved with those ingredients, but you could try bleach. Just soak in water and dechlorinator after.

EDIT: and let it completely dry between.

I brew beer as another hobby and even in stainless steel kegs root beer is hard to get out. You can try soaking the barrels in PBW, it is what brewers use to deep clean their equipment. You should be able to get it at your LHBS (local homebrew store)

thanks is it okay to use?

It is food safe. Follow the directions and I would give the barrels a rinse.

Here is the info on it....P.B Is a buffered alkaline detergent that has been proven to be more than an effective substitute for caustic soda cleaners. Because of its unique formulation of buffers and mild alkalis, it is safe on skin as well as soft metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, and on plastics. p.B.W. Uses active oxygen to penetrate carbon or protein soils and is not effected by hard water. The oxygen also helps in reducing b.O.D. And C.O.D. In wastewater, which is an added environmental benefit

I purchased 55 gallon barrel screw top lid that had olives in it. I bleached and cleaned really well and it’s been 2 months and still smells like olive RO water. 0ppm still and no issues that I have noticed
