In my current 34g tank I have only one Nero 5. I want to thoroughly clean it once in a while. For this I like to soak it in citric acid.

So, I’m wondering how long can one go without a wavemaker and how much time I have to let it soak. All the other equipment is still running, like the return pump, ATO, heaters, etc.

How long did you have your tank running before you added the Nero? ;) You can go at least that long.

All kidding aside, it will vary depending upon how dirty the Nero is for the soaking time. I pull my gyres and they may stay offline for hours while they soak. No issues, you have your main pump providing some circulation. FYI, my tank is all Acropora and they are fine.

While you can go 8-12 hours or more without, picture a power outage of 18 hours.
For water movement, you can obtain a battery operated air pump from walmart pet or sporting goods which will provide circulation and oxygen for the duration you need to clean your Nero

you got a return pump running/
if yes, no worries
if no, maybe 2-3 hrs depending on ambient temp …think about corals/fish in bag transport ,,,, a lil different, but not really

I'm too lazy to fish the cords out of the stands to totally remove my neros. I just put bowl of RO water on a stool and take them apart and brush then with a battle brush them back into the tanks. I don't know why but the neros don't seem to get as dirty as my other pumps and actually come pretty clean without soaking.

For me, in Citric Acid, I don’t even unplug mine, just into a 5 gallon bucket, running in the bucket for an hour, toothbrush, rinse and back in she goes…..total time 2 hours zero movement, never an issue.

Would vary on fish and water volume but with no movement, my tangs start to become lathargic about 5 ish hours, they slow down, and kinda lie on their side.

That being said, as soon as I turn on movement, they return to normal behavior.

Thanks for all quick replies and good tips. My return pump and all other equipment are still running, so we’re probably good.

Certainly like that idea of a bucket next to the tank without even unplugging it!
