R2R!

i want to hold a discussion. For those of you that QT, how well has that worked for you guys?

for those that don’t, same question applies.

have you guys ever started with one method and transitioned to the ‘other side’ ?

also, how far do those of you that QT go? Do you QT everything ? Just fish? Coral? Inverts? Heck, even live rock ?

I didn't do QT for many years. no issues. Took a break and came back and now it seems diseases are more common so I started with really strict prophylactic treatment. Now I have eased back and I mostly just stick to captive bred OR direct caught (not through wholesale) such as KP aquatics and do observation. Have yet to see a disease doing this but I haven't bought a tang or a butterfly. I know paul B has a supposedly "immune" tank and I suspect mine is like that too (rather not find out though)

Yeah lol. I don't think anyone should follow how PaulB did his for the sake of the animals as its so incredibly risky

I’ve heard of such tanks and I believe every tank is different. But I do agree, I’d rather not find out as I found out once and I tore that tank done (granted I started with dry rock)

Gonna think of this like Star Wars.

Each side think they have the right side or the “light”, and there are those that are fine with both. Personally I don’t QT, and I haven’t for a while, but I have done it in the past for fresh, brackish and salt water. I do plan on QT all my fish I am adding to my current set up, unless I know they are from a source I deem reliable enough to not QT.

When I QT’d, I watched the fish for about 3 days. Then I would dose Prazipro, for 30 to 40 hours, then do a 90% water change. After that water change I added some other chemicals and repeatedly feed the fish for about the next day or two Seachem’s Kanaplex. I would do another water change, watch for another day or two, and if the fish seems alright, he goes in the tank. So this would be a period of about a week and a little more. If the fish doesn’t seem suitable atm for the DT, I do more extensive work. But I never dose copper.

Only do this for fish. I don’t plan on QT for coral or inverts and won’t be getting rock anytime soon, but all the rocks I have gotten and plan to get will be always Live rock.

I dip coral but quarantine all fish per Jay's guidelines. I used to not QT but after a velvet outbreak that would have cost all of my fish if my family had not shamed me into making an attempt to save what I could. I set up a 100 gallon stock tank as a hospital tank and managed to save some fish that I have had for 6+years. Unfortunately I lost more than I saved. That's my experience of not quarantining.

As to quartine results I just put 2 yellow tangs into the display 2 days ago. They are the first additions since the velvet struck so not much experience on QTing.
I did introduce a CBB without quarantine 7 months ago but it was going into a tank that I had recently removed all fish from. I have not had success with them in the past so I skipped QT to reduce the stress on what to me has been a delicate species. Eventually I will be moving it to the larger tank but I may not quarantine it first just because it has been doing so well and has never shown any signs of disease.

I thought about it like that when I started this thread lol.

i believe fish should be QT. Some observe while others medicate either way.

i medicate either way without any problems. I will say though, it can be a PITA to medicate, especially if one didn’t need to.

i believe if one were to QT anything, might as well QT everything else going in the tank. That’s just my belief, and that comes from my bad experiences.

i hope everyone a happy reefing journey however !!

I also realized I didn’t ask R2R for their opinion on a 5 gal Coral/ invert QT.

is this doable with fresh SW WC weekly, with the addition of some DT WC for nutrients ?

i will only build a 14 gal DT. I won’t be able to take out that much water on WC since realistically, I will only have 10 gal of actual DT water volume.

That’s definitely unfortunate. I wish to one day get me a CBB, they’re my favorite fish on my list.

hope you’re in a better situation now.

When I started I knew nothing about qt, or R2R, and my lfs didn't inform me. Nothing I've added was qt'd up to 4 years ago. I've lost fish but not to anything I was able identify like velvet, etc... The only fish ive lost that I could id was my ywg that half his body dissolved . My clowns in same tank appear as the day I got them, 6+ years ago. Same with gf tank. Am I lucky? Doubtful. I've been qting everything since, coral, inverts. No fish added since but I will be purchasing from Dr.reef for my reefer 350

Thank you, yes things are going pretty good now. The CBB is the center piece of my reefer 170 in our bedroom. He is small enough to be in there for a while yet and all other fish are great. I'm really not looking forward to moving the CBB into the 180g due to the presence of a purple tang that can get nasty. I'll probably pull the purple and put him in timeout for a week or so when I bring the CBB over. The purple is actually in timeout right now to make the addition of the 2 yellows less stressful for them.

That’s also another big QT debate would it be best to QT the most delicate reef fish in which just a little amount of stress can kill them. Personally I wouldn’t QT something like a CBB, but I’m sure many others do QT them and have success. If the QT is raising the chances of a sick new fish, I’d rather not QT that fish.

I've sort of settled on the idea that if a fish comes in healthy and seems healthy for a day or two in observation it's more important to get them into a really healthy environment especially picky eaters. I got a little baby filefish several days ago that won't eat anything prepared but is happily snacking on copepods now. In QT he'd just starve and any disease he has (probably not at this point) would have gotten worse.

This right here ^

I just didn't want to put the CBB through the stress. I'm in the process of looking for a shoal of anthias, lyretails or disbar not sure which yet. I want to add at least 7 and am torn between QT and not. I have a 40g breeder set up and running fully established with rock, nems, and some other misfits that have been banned from the DT but no fish so I am seriously considering putting them all in there and just watching them and treating with prazi and try to get them eating well before anything else. I may roll the dice and bring them up if they show no signs of disease after a couple of months. This is definatly not a hobby for the faint of heart
