AND - since this is my first coral - how the F can I make this little guy stay up on the rocks and open up?
He fell down 3x so far...

Definitely a leather coral as for how to stand it up I wouldn’t know if anything I’d put a rock underneath it so it would stand up if you get what I’m saying

My wife has a certain name for this coral...
as soon as she saw it - I got "the look"
haha
I said - give it a few days to open up :)

Toadstool leather, for sure. Pick up a tube of gel superglue (cyanoacrylate) and glue the base rock down. Pick up some epoxy for an even better attachment. I use the coralife one mostly since I like the color, but you can even use the loctite kind. Your lfs should have the epoxy, but superglue should hold it for now.

Edit: make sure it's gel superglue. The standard stuff is too runny. It has a green lid if you get superglue brand.

Really - superglue ??
That doesnt hurt the "feet" ?
but much appreciated in ALL the responses...

Is it mounted on rubble? If so then yeah, superglue the rubble to the rock.

If not, with leathers, you can actually run a piece of string through the base (I use monofilament fishing line) then around a piece of rubble then go the other way through it. It will attach itself to the rock after a bit. This method only works with leathers, though. I'll look for a youtube video I can link.

Update - I moved the leather again - on a flat piece of LR yesterday.
As of now - it’s still shrunken and not opening.
The little feelers on the bottom are extended but not doing much yet

I moved the power head to get more flow around it

Hopefully he’ll stay put this time and will accept the location.

No worries, man, I thought the first pic showed where it had fallen over, that's why I didn't catch it at first. Then when you said foot feelers, I was like... "wait a second..."

Once it opens up, it'll be like this pic.

What coral is that in the sand, a toad stool?

Yep, toadstool leather. It's on a rock, but my pistol shrimp and goby keep burying the base. I tried keeping it unburied for a while, but it doesn't seem to be bothered by the sand, so I've been leaving it now.

I ASSUME this little guy is shedding ?
Sorry for the annoying questions and going back and forth.

Yes, it looks like it is currently shedding. Make sure it has good flow while this is happening, or you can try to manually help it, mine just does its thing though. It should be back to normal within a week or so. Some take longer than others.

Yep, looks like shedding. As mentioned above, make sure it's getting good flow to help it shed.
