With my new tank I have not had any surprises yet with hitchhikers due to the fact that I had used dried rock until today. I had just gotten my cuc in, floated my bags of snails for 15 minutes and started to add them to the tank. I have been watching to see who would start moving and enjoying seeing some activity in my tank when I noticed one of the shells that I was looking at was not a snail but a hermit crab. I thought that I had already previously removed the two hermit crabs that I had in the tank... so I removed this guy and placed him into my qt tank. About 15 minutes later took another look at the snails off to the side of the tank and noticed another hermit. So he has been placed into the qt tank also. Not sure if I will find anymore but if so they will be finding their home in the qt tank. My qt tank is going to be up and running for quite awhile since I will be adding fish to my setup at a snails pace

I have heard too many stories about hermits going after snails even when plenty of empty shells available. So for now will keep them in the qt as continue to do more reading. Would be interested in hearing if anyone has had success with hermits in the display with their snails. Depending might try giving one or two of the guys a chance in there and watch to see how they behave.

i haven't had any issues in my tanks with mixing them. but most of my hermits are pretty small.

I only had issues with scarlet red leg.. Thy steal the biggest turbo snail shell they can find the go around and knock over frags. All my other ones stay pretty small.

My two dwarf zebra snails are great to watch they're always running all over the place and climbing the silicone. Not sure what kind the other hermits are but something did kill one of my snails but mostly they live happily together.

I have always had a mix of snails and hermits. IMO the benefits of hermits out weigh losing a few snails. Plus I enjoy watching them.

For those who have hermits in their display about how many empty shells do you keep per hermit about?

I don't even notice the empty shells, If I find one I just toss it behind the rocks. No clue as to how many I have.

I have had for blue legs wipe out thirty nerite snails in the past year so I don't trust them. My scarlet legs only come out at night.

Every one has a opinion and I respect everyone opinion. For they are essential for my sump. Lol

I keep hermits with no issues...well sometimes they steal food from the corals. But most of the time I think when people believe the hermits are attacking snails, they are really just eating an already dead snail.

I've always had a mixture. They are good at what they do, so I don't mind loosing snails here and there. I have snails breeding in my tank, usually pull about 2-5 dead ones out of my mp-60 everyday. Some reason they go to that power head, and it sucks them out of there shells!!

I may give them another chance when I setup my 150g but I don't even have algae in my tank right now. Lol

Thinking that since I have them will give them a chance in the main tank and see how they do. I have a bunch of empty shells that I can throw in. Had a coworker that I was talking to that also has a saltwater tank, her husband is the one who is really into it, told me that the hermits that they have in their tank usually leave the snails alone although they will go after each other sometimes trying to take someone elses shell. We will see how everyone behaves.
