I have no idea what this is but i noticed this last night.

It looks like a pineapple sponge. If it's in the water, does it have a bit of a fringe on top, like a white pineapple? Definitely some sort of sponge.

Pineapple sponges are harmless filter-feeders. You might get a surge of them in a newer tank, but they'll settle back down on their own. You mostly see them in sumps and filtration compartments once a tank is established, sometimes tucked around the underside of the rockwork. Totally harmless to corals, which will just grow over them.

It’s a pineapple sponge. Remove it ASAP if you don’t want hundreds more littering your tank.

I started off with just one big one in my 29g, and now they litter the equipment and the rock work.

They aren’t harmful, but they are as sure as heck invasive.

I’ll get a picture of the rock work in my tank, to show you all of the pineapple sponges.

Yup it’s a pineapple sponge. I get them but they don’t really take over I just have a few here and there and if my hands already in the tank I’ll take em out

They love new and filthy aquariums. They will flood drain pipes. But the only thing you can do, is clean the pipes. So, even if he removes that one, they will still be in a cryptic/dirty zone. They do a great job at helping.
Now encrusting sponges can really become a problem.

For my 2 cents leave them. They are filter feeders and provide good cleanup and will only generally inhabit dark out of the way spots. They tend to go a bit nuts in new tanks but will die back on their own in time.

Pineapple sponges wont fight corals or other life forms for territory. Pineapples like dark places.
Encrusting sponges can be toxic and will force corals to polyp bail out.

It's a new tank. They go away as the tank becomes more stable.
Could take a year.
