Well, they sold him a purple tang for his 40 gallon cube to help him bring his nutrients up if that helps.Sounds like you have a solid plan.
I am just curious about what brand/type of light you have, maybe we can be of some assistance in level beyond "keep the whites low" etc.
Not saying the LFS would sell you something unsafe on purpose, but we have seen some on this forum attempt to sell Hippos to people who are rocking 15 gallons, so we like to check all the boxes

oh no, I named it that, but then I kept changing it and increasing it because I was having problems w cyano a while back when that relented I increased the amount of power. when you say they sold me a tang I've been to a few different LFS. But I like the tang and that's why I wanna buy a bigger tank so I can keep him longer. That's one of the reasons why I wanna get a longer tank anyway but I think I have about a year before I have to go that direction even though I'm tempted to buy one right now.
I love having my tank but I wish I had not gotten a cube tank. And not just for the horizontal swim space which is part of it. Flow, is hard as it lighting the depth of the tank. My upgrade may not be much in the way of volume. I have no desire to keep open water fish and don’t want to have to move a huge tank (nearing retirement and I don’t want to deal with a house this size many more years) but it will be a rectangle! Lol
See how the graphs on the left have a table like look? That is what you want, ramp up to your chosen par out put and keep it there for 4-6 hrs then ramp down. I like to do 10-11hrs of light my ramp is 12 noon to 3pm full par setting 3-8pm full and ramp down until 11pm moon light until 12am. With your schedule its no wonder stuff is doing poorly you have full par for what 15min maybe. Adopt one of the presets at the left.there are different LED settings they have for the reef app. Right now I have it on one that slowly gets brighter and brighter as the day goes on and peaks and then decreases. I kind of hoped I was simulating like the sun rising over the course of the day, but I probably should switch over to something in the Program library . The one on the right is my current program setting.
if you put your finger on the photo with the programre library setting, it shows you the different Kelvin energy that I guess it emits. For some reason red Sea displays output in terms of Kelvin and not par.
I depends on how much water you’re pushing with the one power head and the return and how many dead spots you have. I COULD run one at higher power but it works better for my tank to run two at lower levels with less dead spots and less high direct flow for some of my corals.
