Fish Only With Live Rock And Zoas. I run a 90g reef system and the fiance has taken a liking to all the fish not allowed into the zen atsmophere of the reef system and the aggressive feeding rituals.rofl. hence the need for another tank. thinking a 90g system next to the reef. I am looking for input from fowlr tank owners on the benefits youve seen from running the extras such as a sump skimmer reactor etc. and or if the simplicity is suitable. Im looking to go basic and figuring the 90g with 2 oversized for the water volume hob simple filters with 1 running media and the other with cheato and a simple light for both DT and make shift fuge. I do a 10g wc on the reef weekly and figured I would do a wc on the fowlr tank every other week using the reef tank water and adding from 5-10g new SW making the ratio 15-20g wc every other week.?.

I like the addition to the acronym! Now I know what to call my system: a FOWLR-AI for and inverts.
I am still a beginner, but I think doing a sump and skimmer is the better way to go. Sumps give you so many benefits including water volume increase. It just seems right. But I think it can be pulled off with canister filters.

I started my first tank as a 75 gallon FOWLR tank and ran 2 HOB Filters and it did fine but I upgraded to a sump and oversized skimmer and it ran exponentially more efficient. You will be plagued with algae problems without the skimmer and the zoas will do much better. Also another huge bonus was the large filter socks I had 2 on my tank at any time and had 8 that I would rotate and wash in the laundry(by themselves of course) with just cold water. Hope it helps!!
