I'm currently building a 125g FOWLR tank with 55g sump. I'd like to set the sump up without a refugium. I've got the sump built and plan on putting my skimmer in the inlet section, live rock and heater in the middle and then the return pump in the 3rd section. Is that sufficient for a FOWLR tank or is the refugium essential? Thank in advance.

Not required at all. I don't even use them in my reef tanks. your plan would work. As long as the water level doesn't fluctuate in the skimmer section, you'll be good.

I'm currently building a similar size system but am putting the refuge in, not necessary but kinda future proofs the tank and does more good than harm, have you so much live rock that you need to fill the sump as well?

I've probably got about 175 lbs of live rock. I was just looking to put some of it in the sump for some bonus filtration. If I do live sand and live rock in the sump, is that creating a refugium?
