Currently have a reef in my basement 40g … I want to set up a peninsula in my house upstairs it’s open concept but the peninsula will kind of separate the kitchen and living room nicely but not sure size is okay? Is FOWLR easier I guess you can say to maintain then a reef? Same kind of filtration. Sump and all that? Need ideas

Yes, FOWLR vs reef boils down to yes fish only are easier than corals to maintain. Both FOWLR and reef can do sump or not do sump... It boils down to what YOU want.

Yes for me FOWLR is easier than reef tanks. Dont need to worry about calcium, alk, etc just focus on nitrate and phosphate to stay reasonably low so no major algae outbreaks occur. The only thing with FOWLR that is difficult is getting a good size so you can keep the nice angels, butterflies, triggers, etc that need that extra room for swimming but also to keep aggression down compared to alot of the smaller reef safe fish. Like I wouldnt get a FOWLR system smaller than 6ft 200ish gallons to allow for a lot of the nice bigger fish.

FOWLR I guess you can call it easier since you don't need to worry about Alkalinity/Calcium and not really worry to much about Nitrates and phosphates too much unless you have major algae issues. You can always go reef as well just have to get more flow in reef compared to fish only. Fish only usually have nicer fish as well. 40G though you will be limited on nicer fish and I would recommend for this size tank a reef tank or a lion fish tank or a angler.

Angler though need to be only fish in tank though lol

I rather do it right.. possibly get a sump. Unless you know of other ideas? Also

what size tank would be like 5 feet long? I’ve always been in the 40g Breeder haha

40 Gallons again you can do Angler fish setup only fish can go in there; Lion fish smaller size ones you can put bigger fish in there should be ok with lions usually. 40 Gallon limited on fish to be honest.

Def don’t want to do 40 gallon need at least 5-6ft upstairs península style

I'm LITERALLY changing my mid-size FOWLR tank this weekend because I didn't have a sump... I'm also in the internal plumbing with internal returns (not HOB... but roots in HOB)

I *am* in the sump fan club because there is so much one can do with that extra water and real estate... 5 feet is just one dimension - how tall and how wide will determine your volume. I'm not fan of tanks taller than 22" BUT I'm only 5'6" so getting to the bottom to clean can be hard... and tall plus deep well that is just worse... I wish my 180 gallon had been placed with enough space that I could squeeze my whole self behind it...

Look at your space, decide what you want (you already decided sump), plan and go for it.

We are going to want to see photos as room dividing tanks are always stunning!!
