I’m curious as to why my foxface gets up by a rock and changes colors to a great and white almost. He does it randomly through out the day for several minutes at a time.

is this a natural behavior for them or is it due to stress.

I have a 65 gallon tank and am setting up a 150gallon.

the fox face is a juvenile, I just recently added a white cheek tang (juvenile) and a blond neso tang (juvenile) into the tank. They all seem to be doing well with each other. I haven’t seen the fox face chase or be chased by anything.

He's going camouflaged when frightened or sleeping. Changing colors is one of his forms of defense from being eaten in the wild

Completely expected and normal.

My foxface used to go cammo constantly when he was younger. They tend to do that when they get nervous. It's amazing how quickly they change colors. Ray hasn't done that in a couple of years now. Don't know if they just stop changing as they get older, or he just mellowed out. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I was going to say he does it when he sleeps so that’s why I wasn’t freaking out to much I just didn’t know if the random times through out the day was normal or not.

thank you guys for the info I’ll cross the concerns off the list. Much love!

Question for you, would you by chance know what this is? It’s like a silk web thing floating around my tank. Somthing like this pops up about every other week or so.

What types of corals do you have? Any sand sleeping wrasses? I see the same types of thing from time to time. I know my green slimer and Hollywood Stunner chalcice sometimes slime me when I do maintenance. My melanaurus wrasse creates a slime coat around himself when he sleeps. It will occasionally float around the tank. I've never been to worried about it.

I have 2 fire shrimp, 2 Halloween hermit crabs, 1 purple tang, 1 powder gray tang, 1 blonde neso tang, 1 one spot fox, 2 dwarf clown fish, 2 diamond goby.
One of the shrimp just molted
