I have a Foxface that developed a popeye injury (because just one eye) yesterday? He was swimming fine and eating last night. Since he stresses so easily I decided to wait to see how he would do. This morning he is hiding and seems to be feeling worse but still eating. Foxface is temporarily in a 75 with 5 other small fish. My 125 is fallow due to ich from not quarantining macro algae. Lesson learned... I have treated fish for ich end June/July and no signs at all since. I used tank transfer method with smaller 20g. tanks. I know that this tank is overcrowded but I carefully monitor my water and all fish get along peacefully. He is with a long nose butterfly, melanauras wrasse, falco hawk, 3 inch porcupine puffer and a 2 inch picasso trigger. All fish are quarantined from instructions from here. Thank you all for the wonderful information you all have contributed to this forum! My water tests at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 50 nitrates (high), ph 8.0. Water change is due. Tank is a 75 gallon fowler with a 15 gallon sump and a protein skimmer rated for 125 gallons. My question is should I move foxface to a quarantine tank and maybe treat with antibiotics and Epsom salt or should I leave him where he is? I'm torn over this because he stresses so much every time he gets moved. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you in advance.

Hey, Salt1823, and welcome to Reef2Reef!

One-sided popeye is often due to an injury. In many cases, you can dose Epsom Salts (USP grade, no additives) in whatever tank the affected fish is in. Use one tablespoon per five gallons of water, can dose a second time at 48 hours or so. Epsom is Magnesium sulphate, IIRC, so won't harm your tank - just raise Mag levels a tad above normal.

It's generally good practice to post a photo of the affected fish, if you can - sometimes, the disease pros around here will spot something that you didn't.

what is "USP grade"... is it "unscented"? I've got similar situation with my Flame angel. I've already dosed Prazipro into DT, is it safe to also add Epsom salt simultaneously with Prazipro? Thanks.

is it good to add epsom salt with cooper in qt?

Thank you for your advice! I should have posted a picture. I dosed with Epsom salt last night.

This might be better pic. I did move him to a 30 gallon hos/ qt tank on Sunday morning. Gave him kanaplex on Sunday evening just in case. Last night I dosed the Epsom salt. He is swimming and eating some nori. Just no improvement on his eye. I'm not sure how long it will take to see improvement?

USP will certainly be unscented - Epsom Salt is Magnesium Sulphate, and you don't really want any extra ingredients. I should think it's safe enough with Prazi-Pro, especially since Prazi starts to degrade moderately quickly, IIRC. (Prazi only takes 24 hours or less to do what it's gonna do, so . . . )

Not certain how long it'll take - you can dose _one_ additional time in a couple of days, if you'd like. If you don't see improvement within a couple-few days after that, maybe consider antibiotics.

My thoughts exactly. That’s one heck of a pop eye!

Thank you Maritimer & 4Ford! I feel bad for my little foxy man. I'm hoping that he doesn't loose the eye.

Thanks @Maritimer and @4FordFamily very much for info. I added epsom salt last night and already this morning the swelling seems to have gone down. Prazipro was added on Sat, do u think it's ok to add more today (Wed)?

I would wait on second dose of prazi until tomorrow or Friday.

I'm hoping that it's just me... Does it look like his good eye is starting to swell? Sorry about the water spots on outside of tank. @4FordFamily & @Maritimer

Not to me ... but I've never kept foxface.

Thank you for your patience and advice! I have only been in saltwater for less than a year(9months). I have scoured this place for all kinds of information. I am very happy you all are here!

I know this is an old post, but I’m have the same issue with my Emperor angel in QT.

Yesterday I dosed epson salt with no improvement today, in fact the eye looked worse this morning.
I am planning on starting erythromycin when I get home later. Question. Will it be ok to add with the epson salt and copper in the tank?

Or should I do a water change first.
She’s 16 days into a cupramine treatment along with a wrasse.
