This fish is crazy. He doesn't even look like the same fish but these pics were actually taken less than a minute apart.

He is eating just fine and seems pretty happy even tho he looks terribly stressed when he does this.

He is very much stressed out and that is why he is doing that. How long have you had him and what other fish do you have in the system with him?

yeah they tend to get spooked and scared really easily. Mine bugs out with the slightest fast movement in front of the tank and after a few minutes back to normal. In my experience they feel more secure and less skittish when they have more room and with more fish around them in the tank.

He doesn't seem stressed.

He swims all over the tank, eats just fine & nobody is picking on him. It's just a thing he does.

He is relatively new to the tank (about 10 days)

Water looks great. Temp may be a tad high for him so we've put a fan on the sump as a precautionary measure.

100% normal. I nicknamed my FoxFace "Dr. Nope" because at the slightest hint of anything possibly concerning he Nopes right out and hides for a bit. It's also why they need more tank length, because when they are (frequently) freaking out, they zip across the tank at high speeds, and mine has rammed himself full speed into powerheads and things during these times.

I've had mine for more than 5 years, and if I walk up to the tank in the morning before lights on and he sees me it will 100% initiate a full-scape freakout. They're just super jittery fish.

I've had mine for nearly 2 years. Doesn't go camo nearly as often as he used to, but he's still a high strung fish. If I walk past the tank before the lights come on, he makes sure to give me a morning shower. Other than that, he's a model citizen.

Yup, Foxfaces are the epitome of a Spaz. My One Spot will get spooked by his own reflection or someone just randomly walking by the tank. He usually doesn't go night camo like that but his color fluctuates throughout the day. I never worry unless it goes completely jet black (Super Stressed). Mine also periodically darts up to the surface and does a quick about face effectively splashing me in the face while I am trying to feed. Sad thing is I could probably hand feed him seaweed but his spastic nature and venomous spines make me very wary of such things.

I have had mine for 3 months. He goes camo often usually after eating and when he goes to sleep. Biggest fish in the tank and is the biggest baby lol

I have 2. One in my 135g and one in my smaller tank with just himself and damsels. The one in thr bigger tank is friendly and will come up to the glass thinking im feeding him. Never runs unless i point at him lol i nkticed fish dont like being pointed at.

The other runs away the second i go in the room.

Normal stressed/camouflage coloring as everyone says. Just be careful when you do any tank maintenance where you place your hands in the tank. Find where your Foxface is located first. Stings aren’t common - they are peaceful fish. But when ppl get stung it is usually because they did not see their camouflaged Foxface & inadvertently hit the spines.

Mine does the same. Any time I add seaweed and grab the clip or do a water change he looks exactly like yours. As soon as my hand comes out of the tank he's back to yellow and happy lol.
