Hello! Got a magnificent foxface about a week ago… and twice now he has stuck up his dorsal fin and secreted a white milky substance? Kinda did a little shimmer thing right before he does it…. Both times right at the end of a feeding. This a dominance thing? Then he runs around the tank eating the secretion…. All I could think of it being is his venom? Can eating it make him sick or the other fish? They were all having a snack

These fish shed their mucous layer which is why they’re so good at not being infected with parasites. That could be it - Usually they shed in the night though. They can sometimes shed in the day but it’s rare.

Even if it was his venom, venom needs to be injected you can drink snake venom with no ill effects but injecting it is a whole different story

I don’t think it’s a mucous layer….. I can see it coming out of his dorsal fin spines… each separate one…when they are straight up? It’s definitely weird…. And it only takes about 5 seconds and there is a cloud above him about the same size as the fish. Wish I could get a video… but it happens unexpectedly and super fast

I was actually watching mine today and saw him shed his mucous while eating. It just kid of floated around the tank until it got sucked into the overflow.
I’m assuming yours isn’t acting weird and feeling well?

all the fish are acting well! I actually just saw it happening again and I think it may just be a mucous layer after all!!! Was just kind of sliding up the spines. Lol just looked super weird

Is it really wispy and almost see through? My old foxface used to go after his and much it. The one spot I have now doesn’t.
