I purchased this frag last weekend from a LFS against my better judgement. They had some cyano in the tank, but I loved the green polyps.

1) Any ideas on the species?
2) Is the purple growth part of the coral or dreaded algae?

Thanks!

It does look like Cyphastrea, and hard to tell from the pic but I believe the polyps are mostly closed. Is it like that all the time?

It was in poor shape when I got it a week ago. Only a few polyps were extending. Everyday, there are more polyps extending. I think i have it too high in the tank. Gonna move it down and see if I get more extension.

This is in a 3 gallon pico reef.

That frag has already been in your tank for a week?! Looks like a fresh fresh fresh fresh fresh fresh cut. Purple algae appears to be coraline (good stuff). If it's hard and doesn't scratch off with your finger that's what it is. Not to be confused with the purple base of the coral on top

Edit: that brown spot may be a vermetid snail but hard to tell from the pic. If it's hard and protruding from the disk, it may be best to physically remove it outside of the tank so they don't spread.

Get some good food to it, it'll help it recover. Decent powdered coral foods, brine shrimp nauplii, rotifers, things like that.
