Frag tank filter socks?

Howdy all,

I am deciding how I wanna do my filtration in the sump for my frag tank.

My tank is a 34G Deep blue frag tank. My sump is a three chamber 15 - 20 gallon sump.

There is a spot for one filter sock however, I am not sure I wanna use filter socks. Unless this isn't possible.

I use filter floss on my 30AIO and it's brilliant and easy maintenance... just throw them out when they're dirty and replace.

I am wondering if I use maxspect bio spheres and what not can I avoid filter socks all together? I just know that the micro stuff won't get filtered out.

Any thoughts, input is appreciated.

You definitely don’t need filter socks but the biospheres won’t help directly for mechanical filtration.

Personally, I avoid filter socks. Too much hassle to maintain and change. You could try Filter media cups and then use floss etc.

Maybe I'm old school but I like filter socks, if you change them out regularly it keeps the sump much cleaner. My last sump was sockless and I had to vacuum it out more often.

That would just sit in as a filter sock... Very interesting. I like this idea and just cut circles of floss out. I need to figure out a way to cut the floss better

Hahaha that's risky bussiness ! But I've heard it works well. Do you bleach? How often do you replace ?

That would just sit in as a filter sock... Very interesting. I like this idea and just cut circles of floss out. I need to figure out a way to cut the floss better

I’ve removed filter sock holder at this point to install a rollermat but used to run the media cups. You can just cut floss in small pieces and stuff into a cup. Works fine, I Used to change it weekly.

Hahaha that's risky bussiness ! But I've heard it works well. Do you bleach? How often do you replace ?

I use bleach, I put it on the longest cycle with a presoak and extra rinse. I change them out once a week maybe every 5 days. I bought a 10 pack and my tank has 2 so I can go a month.

When they come out of the washer I let them air dry for a few days. I run a load when I put my last 2 in so I have time for them to dry and air out.

Does anyone simply forgo socks together and just use media spheres & a refugium?
