Why is it most people use low frag tanks. ie 10” and under. Wouldn’t it benefit to have a higher tank for more levels or is it a manufacturing gimmick? All premanufactured “frag tanks” I see are roughly 8-10”. I’m using my old 29 gallon that’s 18” high and have 3 tiers spaced 4” apart and it seems to work good with some corals preferring high light while other frags do best lower. The ones up top and in the middle in high flow and the bottom shelf and bottom of the tank with low flow.

I think there are plenty in the 12" range - my deepblue is that. The point is that you don't need more than 12" for a frag tank - more height simply means less light gets to the corals.

I think it’s mostly about making it easier (cheaper) to light. Also easier to maintain, don’t need to get wet up to your elbows to pick something up off the bottom, etc. Secondarily I think it’s also because people like to look at and display some things top-down.

But your right, a frag tank can be any shape, or really anything that holds water!

You've pretty much stated the perks, easy to keep your hand / arm out of the tank and even more important, be able to get a top-down view of how things are. I love the 10" profile and doubt I would have gone higher if I was doing the tank over again.
