Hi everyone,
I am planning on setting up a frag tank to grow softies and lps and am looking for guidance.
My plan is a 8ftx6ftx7inch flood and drain tray
with a 70 gallon round poly tub as the sump.
I plan on having a skimmer not sure what one yet, but i plan on using the 70 gallon tub as a massive refugium lit by a 165w viparspectra grow light.
Would this work? I only plan on having a few small fish to help with algae maybe a small tang?

For strictly frags I don’t see why not. To grow a large colony in no way. Just remember to have your lights mounted up high or the intensity turn way down to composite the shallow tank.

Would one sbreeflight be enough? If it was high enough and at 100%

For 8’x6’ no way. Your typical 16 Sbreef only has a spread of 24”x24” even a good quality light would only be 30”x30” at best. I’m not a sbreef fan in any way. Personally that size frag tank I would highly suggest T5’s you can get 4 - 48” 8 bulb T5 fixtures cheap from amazon and put 2 side by side and 2 length wise and that would produce enough par and pur to grow anything. I would also recommend ATI bulbs with at least half being blue + the rest coral plus. Some folks run all ati Blue plus bulbs like I do.

I live in australia so they arent cheap red sea bulbs on there own are 50$ each. Would 3 work? I am only going to be keeping softies and easy lps like hammers and acans

I don’t think so. Just due to the pure size. 8 foot by 6 foot is a big big area to light up. Honestly 3 rows of 3 would be the bare minimum with 4 rows of 4 being ideal. The cost of lighting that monster is why most don’t do ones that size. I hope you do it as you will have a lot of eyes drooling over it mine included!
