greetings.
Happy New Year.
looking at starting a frag/grow out tank for softies only.
looking at using 50g Rubbermaid stock tank.
question.. do I need a sump?
 
yep,i would,somewhere to put skimmer ,reactors,misc media,more water volume?? jmo :cool:

I don't use a skimmer....ever...... or any of that other stuff. floating algae scrubber.
H2O change every 7-10 days.
can't see needing the water volume.
this going to be softies only. guaranteed stonies will never see this tank.
a few low priced fish, you know.....$10 damsels, :rolleyes: to contribute to the nitrates.
 
I don't think you need to - I've ran a 20G long as a small frag system with a hob marineland penguin biowheel and it was fine. That said you probably *SHOULD* have a sump if you're mildly serious about it. Even if that sump is just a rubbermaid container with some rock and a pump to add water volume.
