If you were setting up a frag tank for zoanthids and chalice's, would you put a skimmer on it? I'm thinking about putting a skimmer that's rated for half of the actual water, ex. if the tanks 100 gal then find a skimmer thats rated for 50 gal.

Any opinions on this to all you super zoa growers out there?

I would put a good skimmer on it. Or i would plumb it into your main system. I dont have a frag tank yet because i dont feel the need for one at this time two frag racks and some ground space does it for me, but when i do i will most likly plumb it into my main system.

If your setting up a hundred gallon I would get one rated for 100gal...most of them are over rated as a sales pitch...;) if you don't mind doing weekly water changes then go smaller if ya want... It really boils down to maintence... How often do you wanna fiddle with the tank??

Depends...if you are feeding the chalices a lot and have a small cuc, then you may want a pretty good skimmer.

I think having it plumbed to your main tank is nice as far as water volume and then you can have one powerful skimmer for both tanks.

I'm in the same situation with my frag system and I am overskimming since I will be feeding heavy.

I would treat it like it was a display tank.... skimming, good ligthing and flow, good husbandry.

One thing I noticed is that all my zoas were growing better when i had an under rated skimmer on my system (dirty water) and then when i upgraded the skimmer the zoa growth slowed down. aka why i'm setting up a frag tank seperate from my sps system.

anyone else believe that zoas grow faster in "dirty" water?

When we talk dirty water, I hope were talking nutrient rich tank not literally dirty as in un changed water, nitrates, phos, nitrites and ammonia, cause that is typically a misconception. IMO

I've had friends who run ZEO or ZERO nutrient tanks specific for SPS that polyps cannot grow in or dont do well in.

keith, my frag tank had a very slow rate of flow from the main system and was definately a lot dirtier than a somewhat LN system. I actually now have issues when putting zoas in the main tank. I would put a skimmer but not over the per gallon rating
