I've got this orange mushroom that has grown and shows no sign of stopping. Hard to tell from the pic but about 8" across. Hard to tell how many heads, as they've grown on top of each other.

How would one go about fragging a mushroom like this?

Thanks for your help!

Mushrooms are self fraging. They split by themselves when they reach a certain size. You can cut them into pieces to make more if you don't want to wait. The trick either way is to separate the shroom from the rock they are attached to. You have to cut/scrape them at the base/foot which will often lead to a new mushroom growing from the tissue remaining on the rock), or chip/crack a piece off the rock away with the shroom attached to it.

I take a knife and chip away at the rock at the base of the mushroom until it falls off. I don't cut the actual mushroom at all
Does this typically result in a new baby if some of the foot is left behind?

I usually leave nothing behind (I don't cut the actual mushroom) but if you leave a bit behind then ya, you'll get a new mushroom. Doing it this way you also have little bits of rock rubble attached to the shroom which makes it easy to glue it somewhere

Are you trying to frag for propagation or to control the growth?

I am trying to frag it. I'd love to have this in my other tanks.

If I were to cut off a large piece, would it be ok? It is very attached to the rock.

The green hairy mushroom next to it had a head recently fall off for the first time. We put that into another tank and it's doing well. It too, is very well attached to the rock.

Ok just so I'm clear here. You can cut a shroom from a piece of rubble and as long as a decent piece of foot is still attached it should grow a new piece with a mouth?

Beautiful mushroom garden btw!

try to glue frag plugs around it or as close to the foot as possible! maybe it will walk over onto it. If not cut the rock. u can use a screwdriver and hammer. be careful!

Ya that should work out just fine, but it's not what I try to do. I try not to disturb the mushroom at all while fragging that way it's in good shape and I don't have to wait for it to heal up.

Right on do you just wait for them to frag themselves by moving around and splitting?

Thank you! We got these small and they took off. The hairy mushroom has nice movement.

I like the sound of this. I could lightly glue a frag plug on the edge of the rock. It is growing over the edge. Then break off the frag plug after the mushroom grows onto it.
