Fragging leathers?

That's weird, I don't run carbon and have acros growing in here with no skimmer. Nothing cares when I cut leathers.

Oh man, love the ornate leopard as well as some of those leathers!

Glad you haven't had any problems. LPS in particular are sensitive to some leathers (both their slime/shedding and chemical warfare), so, as general information for someone planning to injure these soft corals while still in the tank, adding carbon can help mitigate the negative effect.

I simply just let my Kenya tree frag it’s self haha !

Ifyou see on the left side it dropped a branch but in the back of the rocks I have about 8 or so
Is that an orange Kenya? It’s stunning!

In the back corners are they purple and green kenyas?
Left corner is a japanese pink nepthea. Right corner I'm told is a palau nepthea I dunno tho. (Never seen one so yellowy) The other green one is a green Kenya. I also have the darker green Kenya which is a really good looking leather.

Please remember that we at Reef2Reef pride ourselves on being friendly and welcoming. We take our "be nice" rule seriously. Personal attacks or comments intended to insult/belittle others are not allowed.

You are welcome to disagree with other members. In fact, we often learn from people who do things differently than we do. However, disagreements should never be done disrespectful or with condescension, and they should certainly never become personal attacks.

I have cleaned up a few posts where this rule was not followed. Let's keep things in-line with our rules moving forward.

@i cant think did you cut the leather and how did it go? I have one I want to frag a branch that’s growing sideways and too close to a few new sps frags.

thanks in advance.
I did cut it actually, I now have 2(.5) large and still nice colony sized leathers. I’ll get a photo of both in a few minutes. I honestly didn’t have any side effects and I didn’t run carbon or anything out of the ordinary either.

Glad to hear it went well. Did you use a razor blade? I’m thinking to give it a shot next weekend hopefully it goes well too.
I got some fresh clean clay/modelling knives and did it that was. When I get photos of everything I’ll also grab a photo of the knives I used and will now use for as long as I have a reef tank.

I cut mine with scissors , then I put the cuts in a basket with rubble with low flow and wait for about 2 weeks to check it out and see it the frag attached to pieces of rock /frags plug.

My Finger Leather drops limbs naturally, lobes drop from toadstool. As far as attaching them to a frag or rubble, I had an idea a few years back while tying up plants in garden, which I do with panty hose so the plant can grow. So, clean hose, cut to desired width, works great even on rubble like velcro. The panty hose has great elasticity for inflation and water can easily pass through it unlike rubber bands. They are cheap and I can get a ton of strips from a single pair!!

I don't use scissors because mine are grosssss and I don't trust them. But I just grab a fresh razor blade. I'm even lazier, I have an "acclimation box" full of rubble that I toss the cuts into and just let them attach on their own. Once everyone is attached well they come out of the box.
I’ve used scissors but a razor blade is good as well.
I also like the rubble in a small tupperware and just let them attach.
Years ago i used cheese cloth and would net them over the rubble but it can get messy.

I’ve produced over 60 leathers from one coral using scissors and glue without a single incident. I plan to continue to do it this way as long as the outcome remains overwhelmingly positive. I cut both the crown and the stalk.
You glued them to rock or plug?
