fragging procedure, need to increase my survival rate

Hey folks

Iv'e been dabbling with zoas for about a year now and when it comes to fraggin zoas, especially the little ones, my survival rates are never great.
Is there anything i can do or something i can use on the frags to help increase their chances?


i've never had a problem with palys, but with small zoas even when i think i've done it perfectly its still only a 50/50 chance they make it:/

What are you using/how do you frag? Are you using iodine? Scalpel, razor, bone cutters, wood chisel?

i use a scalpel to cut them off the rock/frag plug, cutting as close as i can to the rock so the base/mat is fragged too, little spot of super glue, rinse in tank water and return to the rack.
iv'e not used iodine before

Iodine is pretty important when fragging, it helps heal the tissue on zoas after they're cut. Get some Lugol's, you'll notice a difference the next time you frag I promise.

Buddythelion (Darwin) made a video on fragging zoas, I think it's on YouTube. It might be under legendary corals, I don't remember. Anyway, it's not exactly how I do it but it'll show you about the iodine, and who knows you might learn a couple other things!

New razor everytime. Try not to scrape the zoa but cut the rock under. I use iodine or even iodide don't know if i've seen any difference. Some day i'll make a video of different fragging techniques. Buddys video is great!

i had recently started using a scalpel with disposable blades but it looks like i need to find me a decent Japanese wood chisel too
i found the vid pretty useful. thanks for suggesting it (i found it by searching 'legendary corals' on youtube, its on their channel somewhere, i would link it but i don't know if i'm allowed)
ordered some lugol's today. will let you know if i notice any difference

one last thing. sorry im a pain i know anyone have any experience with using Coral Revive on zoanthids? wondering if its safe/beneficial to dip new frags

don't forget to use gloves and goggles man! Some of them zoas can be toxic if you get it on your hand and rub your mouth...some have even been known to squirt...that stuff will likely put you in the hospital
