Has anyone ever tried fragging with a bone saw? Not bone cutters, I have those and an inland band saw, a medical hand use bone saw. However I have some encrusting stuff on rocks in a 200 gallon and I think access wise, a stainless steel bone saw would be good for that. The saw teeth on the bone saw are quite large however, and I'm not sure if it will be too damaging to the tissue as it cuts.

They are larger pieces on large rocks that cannot be removed. A link to one of the saws to give an idea.

I was picturing a higher tooth count, something like coping saw teeth. However, it will still work, it will just cause more damage and will create a bigger mess (in the tank). If you have a live rock you can test with in a container outside the tank, it will give you a feel for it.

using this underwater, wouldn't you worry about small metal fragments being left in your tank? or am I way over thinking that?

This is a good point. If it is actually medical grade, it should be a very high quality stainless, so it should not be an issue. But a low quality stainless (perhaps with just a stainless coat) would probably be bad. That said, some trace metals are bad, some are not... Regular steel should not be a problem, it is just iron and carbon, both of which are not inherently bad in a reef tank (in moderation of course).

See here for some interesting conversations about this:

Yeah that was my thought on tooth count. May give it try since they aren't too expensive. And yeah, high quality stainless is fine in tanks, I use it all the time. Like sbash said, if it's not some crazy steel alloy, regular steel is just iron and carbon. So you will probably just see some increased algae growth for a bit if you leave some in for a long time.
