Why has this hobby got so expensive? Most all the vendors are selling bugger size frags for big money. It doesn't take much to spend $300- $400 and get a few bugger size frags that take a long time to mature. They are cutting up there pieces and selling us them for outragious prices. I am tired of seeing this. Give us some chunks so we can enjoy them in our tanks now. Who is with me?

Its all becoming a designer thing. If it doesnt have a name, it isnt cool. And if it does than it sells for 500 for 1 eye or polyp

This is the reason why 99% of corals I own are from fellow reefers. Its about supply and demand. As long as hobbyist continue to by at these high prices they will continue to charge these high prices.l understand there is a lot of cost that a vendor has to deal with. But I also believe that some take advantage of our insanity.

There is a nice lfs near where i live and the price is very reasonable.

this watermelon colony cost me $100.i see 3-4 eyes frag from vendors on here selling for $150 or more.if my lfs can sell it at that price then i'm sure vendors can do it too.It all come down to how much $$$$they can get from you.

I have bought named corals but few. I have tyree seasons greetings monti which was 40, a darth maul polyp that is now a mini colony I bought for 50 and a chalice pack of gonzos misfit wm, motor city mayhem and tyree bgm for 250. All of which are doing great but its outrageous to think I even spent that much. Feel like its a sin to spend as much as some people do on a frag that might not even have 1 eye yet

I can remember the days when I could walk into a LFS and buy any colony of any coral for $35. And when I say colony I mean a coral that is at least 6".

Anyone remember the days of the 9 for $99 shipped deals that shops like Jeff's Exotic Fish offered? I did that many times hahahaha...

Ill wait until something gets old and cheap and plentiful.........sometimes!..LOL But I know what you mean. For instance Bubble Gum Monster was at ? $300 ? an eye when it first hit the market from WWC. Now its very reasonably priced. They'er a lot of colorful corals out there like that now.

You can get beautiful corals without paying high prices. If it bothers you, then invest in one or two very nice pieces and trade for others. I would rather trade than buy any day.

May be you can post something thats unorginal. Just expressing how i feel .

No not at all it was that Pappy guy. I am just expressing my opinion. I have been in the hobby for over 40 years and i am just making a statement. I enjoy the hobby as many people do but some of us cannot afford where this hobby is going.

Ahh, ok. I thought I had offended you. I was confused for a second. As I said though, there is really nothing to afford unless your into having the newest and badest coral at all times. I trade for all my stuff, or sell and spend that money to buy new things. Trust me, I am a college student and have some pretty rare corals. It can be done!

Good to hear there are other young people in the hobby! I'm 18 and also have some really cool stuff but also basics like star polyps, blue maze brain, war coral, hammer and I think all of these are beautiful. Just gotta have a little bit of exotics to spice things up :)

I live in a small town that only has one lfs and in order to get exotic stuff i have to order online. My point is they are driving prices so high we have to settle for less expensive corals. But thats okay we still have our reefs. Thanks for understanding what i have posted.

I totally agree that some of these prices are ridiculous. The problem is if people are willing to spend that kind of money vendors will be more than happy to charge these prices. I try to operate on the "if I like it I buy it" method as opposed to the "oh my god it's new I must have it" method if that makes any sense. At the same time if I had the money I might be willing to spend it on some of these corals. They are nice after all...haha. It's kinda like cars to me. When I go to buy a car I'm not going to a Mercedes dealership since I can't afford one and a person that can afford a Mercedes most likely is t going to a Kia dealership. It's all relative.

Yeah, the reefs we have here and the ones I have seen in Bonaire and Australia are insane! If only we could figure out how to live underwater wed never have to worry about tank maintenance or paying for a coral or fish lol!

No we not have a local reef club.

I agree with the general consensus here. Prices are way too high and thats why I only have one "designer coral". I actually go out of the way to look for brown out big cheap sps frags and most of the time I get amazing colors. That and I like to trade. I like this sort of topic, especially as a teenager it can be tough to afford the hobby. Thanks for the thread Mike!
