For those of you that want to take those special photographs you have taken and go the extra step by digitally framing and matting the portrait, this is a really easy to follow “How To†for those of you that have access to photoshop.

The judicious use of contrasting colors in matting and framing can take a good shot and make it look spectacular.

Nice link Nikon_Guy and easy-to-follow tutorial as well. I'm sure you've probably heard about this as well but I use the framing photoshop plugin from Fred Miranda's site that is basically a set of actions with all sorts of nice presets for different wood grains and colors. Of course it costs I think $15-20 but then again, it sure beats having to set all of those up yourself :)

Thanks for the heads up on that plug-in. I’ve been doing them myself for quite a while and have saved bunches of them that can be used over and over again. I’m not really into wood grains, which takes the most time, but for someone that is and especially someone starting out, that plug-in certainly would make sense.

Here is another example, once you have the process down it takes about five to ten minuets to put one together. If you save them as a PSD they can be reused.

Cool NG! Any way you might upload the PS files here so we can use them? ;)

I will see if we can add uploading PS files to the gallery.

I hear ya NG....I'm not really all that into wood grain frames as well. I feel that sometimes the simply the frame the better it looks and enhances the photo. A lot depends on the width of the matte and the color. It can either completely enhance and add to the photo or totally clash.

I like the one above...nice job.

The problem with that is I have my © on all the matting. In the future I will save one version without it for this purpose if you would like.

But gee Rev, half the fun is creating them and choosing colors and textures to match the individual photo. But I don't mind sharing.

LOL I understand. But we are adding the PS uploading option as we speak! Thanks Coralnutz.

OK Jeremy broke i so this is a no go!

If you want to share your work you can email it to me or to coralnutz and he will upload it to the database to share.

But what if your lazy like Azurel? They dont call him lazy *** for nothing you know.

:D

Not trying to put a plug in for this site or anything but here's the link for the "lazy" people that don't really want to create their own: http://www.fredmiranda.com/shopping/Frames It's $12.00 and well worth it in my opinion. Click on the full details link to get an idea of what can be created.

The next time that I create a frame I will send them to Rev or Coralnutz.

what program do ya'll use to do this?

also, is there a quick way to save it as a "recipe", and just apply it to any photo at the click of a button?

it takes me forever to just get one picture into a forum i can put it up on the web. i take them in RAW, then adjust the photos in that program, then convert than down to size along with converting to jpeg...then i do whatever cropping i need to in another program (i dont convert the size if i plan on cropping)...

it just takes forever to do all of that just to get a couple of pictures posted.

The frames above were made in Photoshop7. (I’m too cheap to upgrade) I also use Photoshop for all post processing.

The frames, once made, can be saved and used over and over by dropping a picture of the correct size into the frame.

Out of curiosity, why do you shoot in RAW for pictures destined for web use only?

i dont know, thats what i gathered everyone did over on RC...

i'm not very good with optics...so i do need a little post picture processing to correct white balance, brighten up pics etc. i've been using the histogram as my brighteness references b/c i'm not very good with adjusting the f-stops etc.

i imagine once i finally get a macro lense (or other piece of decent glass), instead of using this kit lense i'll learn better how to control all of that stuff on the camera and not need to take pictures in RAW as much.

Since I dont have photoshop, I would REALLLLY rather you add it here to CZ......lol....or can Nikon send me a copy of a basic one and tell me how to apply it to one of my photos? now i'm curious as usual

Unfortunately, unless you have Photoshop, you wouldn’t be able to open and use a frame made in Photoshop.

And just for a FYI… I would edit your post to remove your e-mail address from the post. Once the spambots find it, your mailbox will be full of more junk than you can shake an Acro at.
