My girlfriend calls me crying hysterically last night. While doing her usual tank maintenance she removed the coral for easier cleaning. About 45- 1 hr. Later she starts to smell a foul order in the room but does not really pay it attention. Reaching down into the bucket of water to collect the coral to place them back in the tank she realized the smell was coming from the bucket. She pulls out the first wellso to find it it has severely deteriorated, along with the other 6 wellso...... She confused the buckets and placed them all in the R/O bucket. I'm not going to ask if anyone has ever done this but rather is there any hope for these wellso? These were not ur 50-60 dollar wellsos. We are talking 150 and up some ultra rainbows. At this point all I can say is it was a mistake. But would like to tell her they may have a chance to make it. Input and comments please

I doubt they have a chance, corals should never be placed in fresh water. I'm guessing the water wasn't even up to temperature, either. A 45 minute dip in fresh water probably killed them. They might have a chance...but that much dying tissue in the display tank could potentially cause more problems.

For future safety, clean around your corals, using a turkey baster or siphon hose, rather than removing them completely.

So sorry to hear this happened, saw this recently on another forum when someone was dipping their acros, didn't realize they couldn't dip corals in fresh water.

LPS has an odd way of recovering sometimes... I have had a few brains that receeded to nothing then came back. If there is hope, the only hope will be in the tank. Keep an eye on the parameters and give it a shot to save them. It's the least you can do to try make her feel better. If you have a QT system, place them in there for the time being and hope for the best. Watch parameters carefully.

I have dipped corals in Iodine, Cleaner that smells like pine sol (Revive), peroxide, and fresh water. I have scrubbed off the rocks they have been attached to directly under the tap and the corals do get wet. Nothing has died on me yet from doing any of this. Fortunately I have not dipped them into cold RODI water so I can't tell you what's going to happen. 45 minutes is a long time though for any dip.

I wish I had better news, but welso's are probably gone.. and putting them back into your tank may cause far more problems. If they were closed brains they might... miiiight have a chance once you cut off the dead tissue, but I would just count this as a loss. Sorry :(

I did this once when I was selling a shroom rock. Put ro water in the bag then the rock. The shrooms looked terrible. They were covered in slime and were about the size a pencil eraser. But they recovered after 2 weeks. Not sure about a wellso but I think it could be possible.

Yea the length of time in the ro water seems to be the major factor. I could put them in my system for the time bring until her params. level out but would I be putting my coral at risk from damaged tissue landing on mine ?

+1 on this advice. if you have a QT system put them in there with low flow and low light. if it retains a mouth try feeding it mysis directly into its mouth.

The only way you'll know if they can recover from this is if you try. If you never tried there is always the possibility that they could have made it...

Back when I first set up my 90g I had the LFS come out and do the 1st 25% water change so I would know exactly how to do it next time. They put in fresh water instead of salt water. I didn't know it until I woke up the next morning. I immediately did a big water change to get the paremeters back. My welso and leathers didn't make it. My hammer and frogspawn made it, but barely. They aren't dead, but they aren't growing either and that was 2 years ago. I hope you have better luck than I did! :squigglemouth:

Yea you are correct. I'll go over today and inspect for damage . From the pics they look pretty rough with skeleton exposed. But like you said the only thing we can do is try.
