Hi

If I freeze nannochloropsis algae for long term storage. When it’s thawed back to liquid, will it continue to grow with F2 fertilizer?

I want to resume algae culture later down the road.

I don't think you can freeze it and have it remain viable. You can put it into the fridge for a few months and restart a culture from it later. You will need to periodically shake/rotate it to stop the algae from settling, clumping and spoiling. Eventually it will clump up and be dead (non-viable).

Freezing anything living is complicated. The ice crystals formed rupture the cells, and then are no longer viable.

Got it. Thanks, was curious...

I was reading algae paste can be stored for 3 years frozen but does not means it’s alive when thawed.

Also learned from your reply clumps are dead algae. I see that in my bottles so over time I toss them and start with new bottles. The dead clumps cause slower growth whatever reason that is.

Crogentics freezes algae for long term storage. I visited the UT microbiology department which at that time had the largest algae collection in the world. After five year in deep freeze at -150 degrees, they would schedule a defrost and new growth culture. These new growth cycles allowed them to sell Lab grade cultures as well as conduct training seminars with algae doctors from all over the world. It was quite interesting.

PSS. In 10K gallon macro growout system under greenhouse in my back yard, I had many interconnecting systems that were buried in the ground for geothermal heating and cooling. Due to operating parameters of 81.0 as maximum water temperature during 105 degree Texas summer, my electric bill exceeded $1000. I pulled the plug on the project. Everything lay fallow for 5 years. Nine months ago, I restarted a subsystem of 900G. I changed to crops that were less demanding of environmental stability: macro and pods. About 6 months into the new pilot project start-up, I noticed strings of green algae growing from 1/2” pvc that had been dry for 5 years and frozen thirty times.

I keep nannochloropsis in the fridge for up to a year before restarting my culture and there is still enough live cells to get a new culture going I shake the culture as often as I remember.
It’s amazingly hardy stuff.
