so a friend of mines daughter has some gold fish, I’ve helped with the system it’s a 20 gallon with a good filter, uv sterilizer, and air stone. They recently lost power and some how the fish got what they think to be ich, I’m not super knowledgeable about fresh water so I figured I’d ask here. They treated the tank for ich and then the fish got some weird spots on its side.

It’s possible those are ammonia burns. Have they tested ammonia? What did they use to treat ich?

Goldfish also succumb to black spots for other reasons.

I second ammonia burns. Fresh clean waterchanges of about 90% now and Close monitoring of the fish and parameters. It’s possible they will have a new cycle since the power was out, the bacteria most likely starved out. Then if they didn’t rinse or change the media they dumped dead bacteria into the system, causing a spike in ammonia and nothing to eat it. So treat this most likely as a fish in cycle with dropping that ammonia down and the possibility of 50% daily changes while monitoring levels and the stress of said fish.

This appears bacterial and for lionheads like this, often a methylene blue treatment and Epsom salt at 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons will clean this up. Api general cure or Fritz or even Kordon methylene treatment should work
