So after leaving a net in all weekend to get the fish to use it and several fruitless attempts to catch my cichlid the object seems to have dislodged itself.
I see to reason to terrorize my fish farther since he seems happy.

Looks like an anchor worm. Used to see them all the time in Oranda goldfish. We would pull them out with tweezers while the fish was netted with no side effects.
