Can I use a strong freshwater light used for a 5 gallon for a refugium that takes us around 3 gallons? The light description says:
  • Powerful 37 LED lighting system, 7000 K color temperature, 821 lumens

I would just grab a grow light like this. Its just algae so it doesn't need any white light and the more light you give it the faster it will grow, plants prefer the red and blue spectrum. But if you are looking to get a higher end light I would recommend the Kessil H80.

Thanks, might consider that but will the white plant light work, even if not as good as the red lights?

I also have this light, it has tunable red and blue spectrums and is considered one of the best lights in the freshwater community but is way too long:

any light will work, I personally wouldn't spend that much on a refugium light but if you already have one that will work very well. My first refugium light was just a $15 clamp on light years ago and it worked great. Really any light will work just some will grow the algae faster than others.
