Wife's son opened his Fluval FX filter that we got him for Christmas today for his new (not set up yet, new to him, used tank) 150 gallon freshwater tank, will be set up as a freshwater tank. The tank is reef ready, overflow box in one corner return line in the other corner. What we would like to know is if we can attach the hoses from the Fluval to the drain and return fittings on the thru hull fittings on the tank, and would this work if we did?

You'd probably need some adapters, since the overflow pipes will be a larger diameter than the Fluval hoses, but it should work, with a lil' customization. So I assume you don't plan on adding a sump? Depending on your fish, a sump/wet dry system would probably be much more beneficial. Wet/Dry systems work amazingly well for FW set ups.

I know very little about Freshwater tanks, my wifes son was talking about taking out the overflow box and the thru hull fittings in the tank and putting a glass patch over the remaining holes. After looking at the way the Fluval filter worked I thought about just hooking up the filter hoses to the overflow pipe and the drain fitting under the stand and that would keep him from having to drape the hose over the back of the tank. I will do a bit of research on the Wet/Dry system you are talking about. Thanks for the advice.
