I have a foxface and a yellow tang and its like they are joined at the hip, they eat together, swim together, and sleep in the same 'cave' together, inseperable.

My purple tang and Foxface are buds constantly swimming with one another. I wonder why this relationship seems so common as I've seen them together at the lfs doing the same thing.

I hope the foxface teams up with my little tomini tang. Presently, the tomini is impressively cowardly. He pops out of a cave now and again to say hello until a grain of sand spooks him. Little tomini could use a big brother.



A powder brown tang is on my short list of new livestock. My buddy wanted me to wait a bit longer for the tank to establish before adding the powder brown. How do you like him so far? It is likely a powder brown or blue unless i'm talked out of both.


So let me give some more information from my conversation with the fish store guru. She basically hard talked me out of the yellow tang. Said they are way more aggressive than other equally helpful and less expensive tangs (such as the sailfin tang I ended up with). She said the yellow tang isn't a problem by itself if other fish are more established or larger unless the large foxface bonds to him. Then the foxface will basically become the yellow tang's henchman. So i suppose the 2 conditions are that the foxface has to bond to some tang AND the tang needs to be a bully.

That tang is stunning. Definitely what I have in mind for my tank as soon as I'm ready. How do you feel about the chromis? I am considering picking up a group of them (maybe 6-12). Are they interesting enough to justify the place they take over other fish? Are there other small groups of fish you think I should consider instead?

Thanks, I absolutely love the powder brown. As far as the chromis go, you'll find mixed opinions and different results over time. I have 5 and they have never bothered any other fish, or fought amongst themselves. A bunch of people have gotten 5 or more and ended up with 1 over time. They almost never go into the rock work except at night and if they get spooked, so you'll see them in the water column. I like them, but they're definitely buyer beware.

I don't have any now, but wrasses are an awesome option if you want several, and add a lot of color to the tank. @evolved and @saltyhog are experts on them so you might want to visit the wrasse lover's thread or talk with them. They can let you know which you can add together and which not. @evolved showed me this article to read, it's outstanding.

Look for Fusilier damsels, they're great fish and super calm despite the damsel name.

Wrasses are definitely a great choice! So many options/colors and they are hardy, competitive eaters that are not aggressive to other species.

However, Hunter is the expert....I'm just an wrasse addict who caught the disease from him.

I know a fox face and yellow tang pairing up is common. But, the OP was instructed that it could add aggression towards other inhabitants when they pair. Is that true?

I'd say if anything it would help as foxfaces are peaceful fish.like my kole tang is pretty aggressive so I added a fox face which he tried to attack a couple times and learned his lesson.now they swim together but anytime the kole tries to bully a fish the fox face swoops in and gets in between

my regal tang and foxface have been best buddies since i introduced the foxface swim round the tank all day together, only time there apart is bed time the foxface has tried to sleep in the tangs cave but she wont have any of it haha. i was really shocked that they buddied up together

I think I'm blessed with a super chill Purple Tang - My foxface is like this with my PT too. I almost never see them away from each other.

I had big concerns about how they would get on but my experience has been great
