I'm really set on getting a frogfish (in late febrauary) and am setting up the tank, it will be ready for cycling soon. I really want there to be at least 2 more fish in there, its a 30 gallon tank. It will have several corals, i need another tank, my obsession with these things is growing. For this reason, the fish cannot be a coral nipper, nor can it be a clownfish (i already have one and don't want two of the same fish, thats boring.) I wanted a snowflake eel, but am worried that it might outgrow the tank and/or bother the corals, it would also make it much harder to keep any fish.
Full list of requirements
- Must be compatible with frogfish
- Must be compatible with coral
- Must be an easy to moderate feeder (no mandarins or similar)
Any advice is appreciated, thanks

need to know the tank size (sorry didn't see that wrote it there), since the fish has to be quite a bit larger than the frogfish. I wish they'd genetically modify frogfish so they never get larger than 1 inch, the small ones are so cute :D

I still think they're adorable when they grow up but you can't deny how cute they are.

Frogfish will attempt to eat anything they think they can fit into their mouth, a 30G limits you quite a bit. I wouldn't get a Snowflake for that small of a tank. Once you get your Frogfish trained to eat, it may be less likely to eat other inhabitants. I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in here and give you some ideas what you can house with them, maybe a similar sized Hawkfish would work.

Sorry, didn't notice you wrote it there, but yeah, 30 gallons limits you. I know snowflake eels can do well in 30 gallons, and I don't think any wartskin can swallow that.

I'm thinking either Wartskin or Sargassum, both are neat. If a snowflake eel could do well that would make my day, I've wanted a saltwater eel for a long time, freshwater ones just aren't up to scratch (though bichirs are pretty close). A frogfish and a snowflake would probably be all i needed in the tank, those fish are both amazing and their combination gets close to perfection (which can be fully achieved with a couple of nice corals)

I just assumed you were going with the more popular wartskin, but sargassums are cool too. That doesn't get rid of the snowflake option :)

It will depend on what the store has, I haven't been before but have planned a trip. Their website says they have both, but it also says that it is under construction.

Your bioload will be pretty high with those two in a tank that small, what are your plans for filtration?

I've got a fluval 306, a phosphate reactor, and a Coralife Turbo Twist UV (I think its the medium size), plus of course a powerhead (or two)

If you like the idea of an eel go for the Golden Dwarf Moray. Very cool eel and won't go after other fish. Coolest fish I've ever had.

A full grown 4ft snowflake eel will be way too big for a 30g and a frogfish would slurp up a golden dwarf moray in a flash. Also, training a frogfish to eat prepared foods will not reduce its chances of eating something live.

In a 30g, you might be able to put a dwarf lion fish with a frogfish but be sure it's not small enough to be eaten cause it would probably kill the frogfish if it tried to eat the lion.

For the most part, unless you have a very large tank and are able to have fish much larger than the frogfish, you are very limited. Most of the time people keep frogfish by them selves in smaller tanks.
