My friend just started up his tank about a month ago, cycled and water params are good. He's really annoyed at one thing tho, algae. Can anyone tell me what this is and help me eradicate it? Thanks

Also his Kenya trees are really looking sad, anyone know how that happens or how to solve it? They're just droopy and sad looking

DIATOMS:

Diatoms are just a natural things that happens in a new aquarium and will normally will subside with in a few weeks to a couple months.

ID: This Algae normally forms on the sand, glass and rock work of a new tank. It has a variety of colors from a dark reddish color to tan, brown and green. On a lot of occasions there will be oxygen bubble's trapped in the algae from photosynthesis.

HOW TO CONTROL IT:
Medium to strong flow across the sand bed and rock, and watch the amounts of Silicate being added to the system ( top off water and water change purity is the main cause for silicate being introduced to the system )

Time will get rid of that algae. It's just a new tank. Do regular water changes and keep parameters in check and it will be fine.

exactly 6 weeks, all params are good but he is most likely using tap water, ill ask him
yea get off that asap. he'll need prime and stability from seachem and water changes. amazon has it @ $8 each, small bottles 2 $4 at the LFS usually. If they have premix salt get it. they prob sell rodi too

6 weeks and he already has fish... That tank looks tiny too btw

Not to be the tank police but I think he rushed it and that's what's giving him issues now....

Switch to ro di water, do weekly wc 10-20%, feed less, don't get more fish

Given time diatoms will die off but not if he keeps using tap water

Definitely too early for Coral. Looks like one of the AIO tanks like a Red Sea Max or something like that. Does he have a good acrylic cleaner? He will need to prepare to clean algae and diatoms off the acrylic and it will scratch very easily if he is not careful. What light is in that tank? Was it a new tank or at least is the bulb new? It will probably get much worse before it gets better. A GFO reactor would also be a good idea if he has a place to put it.
