Hi guys I'm pretty new to this as well but i have been asked if i could help, so i have a friend who has a reef about a year old unfortunately due to some other things in live he didn't have time to properly care for it, tank has some green hair algae on rock, mainly lps and soft corals some sps which are not doing so good. Is it worth setting up holding tank for corals and fish, strip the tank down bleach the rock or hydrogen peroxide? he said he doesn't mind waiting for cycle but obviously he doesn't want to kill corals and fish. How would you go about it? If you have any questions don't just ask I will try to get as much info as i can. Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

It might be salvaged with a few large water changes. It depends how bad the water quality is.

You might tell your friend to do a 50% water change, and siphon off as much algae as possible. Physically removing it really does help tremendously. And then another 50% water change until the water quality is where it should be. Make sure it is stocked with a clean up crew (snails, hermits) to help with algae control. This is a start at least to keep the conversation going.

Thanks for for your reply, I'll try to find out what are the levels and I'll post them. I though it might be a good idea to spray the rocks with hydrogen peroxide as he wants to re scape, so the rock will come out for a few minutes anyway. Thoughts on that?
