Fritz Turbostart 900

how long does this product on average take to cycle a tank with live sand and dry rock?

If you haven't already done so try a search on this forum. There was a test that used this product and if I recall correctly it was less than 24 hours. However, please search for it in the thread when you search. It had some good info in there has it compared it to a few others. Supposedly a good product but I have never used it.

I believe you have to add ammonia with it for it to be effective. I could be wrong though.

With regards to adding ammonia - yes, you need to add ammonia using the product or any other fishless product like Dr. Tim's. @KStatefan provided the link I was referring to. It is a good, and must read, if this is the route you are going.

Every tank will be different, but the article is a great read. I used Fritz after reading it and had great results, but I also wasn't trying to rush. I still did a month long lightless cycle.

This +1.

Every tank is different. Volumes, rock/sand surface area for bacteria to proliferate, water parameters from salt mix, etc. Set up your tank, run water, add fritz according to manufacturer's specs. You can't really overdose and under dosing will extend cycle time a little longer. To answer your question, fritz turbo start 900 states that they suggest adding a fish after you add the right amount of their bacteria. I don't like or suggest subjecting a live animal to fluctuating water conditions if there is any chance, no matter how slim, it may die for the sake of saving time. Use ammonium chloride as your ammonia source. It's clean, no harmful side effects to our tanks, and you can control how much you put in based on how much bacteria you added. Too much = huge spike and you have to wait longer for bacteria to break it down. Too little = not enough nutrients for bacteria.

I'm with reacclimating 2 the hobby, do all that and let it run for a full month and test. Then add copepods in fuge, chaeto, and coralline algae to get rid of the ugly white rocks and help biodiversity out compete the nutrients from past algae. Oh btw, leave your lights off except in fuge for macro. Personally experience. ***
