I just thought…in the LFS this coral was touching another of the same kind. Could stings from the other coral have killed it/made it die faster?

Depends on the genus. Fimbriaphyllia (frogspawn and hammers) can touch without much consequence. Euphyllia (torch) can touch other Euphyllia but I would not attempt to keep those two genera in close proximity to each other.

Frogspawn that are next to each other are totally fine.
